5 Books to Keep you Warm this Winter

Good god its cold. Why is it cold? I do know it’s January, but I’d have preferred this sporadic snow, dangerous ice conditions and all-around freezing down to your bones business to happen in December. Why? Because it feels festive, and no one has to brave the freezing cold at 8 am on their way to work without risking breaking their neck on black ice. But I digress, it’s cold, and I want something warm, I want to be thinking of the tropics and sandy beaches and summer where I complain that it’s too hot instead of too cold while I buy another bottle of suncream and crack open an ice-cold Coca-Cola; preferably with a damn good book. So I thought to myself, what books could I read now that would chase those winter chills away? Here are five of my personal favourites, enjoy!

Beach Read by Emily Henry

Two literary rivals make a bet to try and fight writer's block by swapping genres. It's funny, moving, the women are smart, and the men are sincere. A charming contemporary romance novel that doesn't bend to the BookTok type and warms the cockles of your heart.

A Town Like Alice by Nevil Shute

A sweeping love story across three continents blossoms in the devastation of war. Expect drama within the heat of the Pacific theatre of World War II, and a charming, redeeming love story as the world rebuilds and heals.

Call Me By Your Name by André Aciman

Coming out is hard, as is falling powerfully and devastatingly in love during the tender years of one's youth. One summer changes everything and changes the course of the protagonists' lives over the next 20 years. It’ll heal you, but will break your heart in the process.

The Jungle Books by Rudyard Kipling

A childhood classic about facing one's fears and determination to carve out a destiny in a cruel and unforgiving world. Set in the wilds of India, a young boy grows up in the jungle and learns how to be a man in this powerful collection of short stories.

The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde

Now, where did I put my handbag… if you're looking for something classic and comedic, then this is the one for you - while not a book but a play, this is riotous good fun if you need a much-needed boost to chase away those winter blues.
